Don’t move out, move up

Trading up the property ladder is a pricey business so developing your home rather than moving makes sense. Loft conversions are the most popular way of getting extra space but tight stairwells and oddly shaped rooms can be a disappointing result.

Architect Andreja Beric isn’t a fan of owners ‘blindly clawing’ for space at the expense of design. ‘The trend is to grab every possible metre,’ he says, ‘but you often end up with bastardised and awkward spaces, which you can’t even use properly. It’s short-sighted and counter-effective.’
